German speciality chemicals company LANXESS successfully hosted its first tree planting activity in Singapore on July 29. The initiative in support of the Singapore Garden City Fund and the OneMillionTrees Movement was joined by Jia Hwa Lee, Director of Streetscape, Singapore National Parks Board. From LANXESS, Vinod Agnihotri, Country Representative ASEAN, to around 60 of the company’s employees volunteered for the event.
In 2019, LANXESS formally set an active climate protection goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2040, becoming one of the first chemical companies in the world to do so. The company has defined clear and measurable objectives, for example to reduce carbon emissions by 75% in 2030 compared to 2004.
“Yet at the same time, we want to go beyond those emissions we save within our company. We believe that protecting the environment and building a sustainable community are important matters that require everyone’s participation. And as it is no secret that trees are known as ‘carbon sinks’ because they can store carbon in their leaves, we are thrilled to be part of this Tree Planting activity today,” Vinod Agnihotri said.
Singapore is an important location for LANXESS. The city hosts the company’s headquarters in ASEAN and serves as an important business and technical hub to support customers throughout the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, the company also operates a biocides production plant and a regional technical centre in Singapore.
Top rating from international organisations on climate change
LANXESS has been recognised as one of the global leaders by CDP, an international organisation that addresses climate change and other issues. The Group is one of 200 companies worldwide on the Climate A List. This puts it in the top two percent of more than 12,000 companies surveyed by CDP. Since 2012, LANXESS has been publishing data on its climate change initiatives as part of its efforts, and this is the fifth time that the company has been selected for the Climate Change A-List.
LANXESS also placed first in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) Europe in the Chemicals category, scoring 87 out of 100 points, in 2021. In the DJSI World, LANXESS came in second place. The Group achieved particularly good results in the areas of product stewardship, management of water related risks and human rights.
LANXESS also improved its EcoVadis sustainability rating to platinum level in 2021. The award is given to the top one percent of the 75,000 companies analysed by EcoVadis. The driver for the higher rating was the improvement in environmental factors.
